Getting here

Avon sits about midway down Hatteras Island, reached by the only road in: NC Highway 12 south through the Outer Banks. Most families drive — the trip down the islands is part of the fun.

The nearest major airport is Norfolk, Virginia (ORF), roughly two and a half to three hours north. From there you'll cross the bridges onto the Outer Banks and follow Highway 12 south through Nags Head, Rodanthe, and Salvo before reaching Avon.

When to come

Summer (June–August) is classic beach weather — warm water, long days, peak energy on the island.

Late spring & early fall (May, September, October) may be our favorite secret: warm enough to swim, quieter beaches, and the fishing is excellent. September is prime time for anglers.

Off-season brings big skies, empty sand, and a peaceful island all to yourself.

Good to know

Weekly stays: Rentals run Sunday to Sunday (seven-night minimum).

Linens: Linen service is included, so you can pack light.
Getting around: You'll want a car. A four-wheel-drive helps if you plan to drive onto the beach — a National Park Service beach driving permit is required for that.
Steps & the walk to the sand: Inside, an elevator reaches every level and there's a bedroom on the first floor — guests travelling with parents or grandparents have told us that combination made the week work. Between the house and the water, though, sits a double dune. It's what gives the beach here its privacy, but it is a genuine climb. As one guest put it to Midgett: “the double dune is wonderful but was a struggle for us.” Worth knowing if knees are a consideration.
Groceries: Stock up when you arrive — the house has plenty of room to cook. Avon has a Food Lion, but we prefer Conner's Supermarket in Buxton for a more authentic island shopping experience.
